Why pixels, not characters
Google does not count characters. It gives the title a fixed width — roughly 600 pixels on desktop — and cuts whatever does not fit, adding an ellipsis. A title of capital Ws runs out of room long before a title of lower-case ls. The meter measures the text in Arial at the size Google uses, so “60 characters” stops being a guess.
How to read the result
- Green — fits on both desktop and mobile.
- Amber — fits on desktop, cut on mobile, where the result column is narrower.
- Red — cut everywhere. Move the words that matter to the front.
Limits
Google publishes no limits; the widths here are the ones observed in results pages and are approximate. Google also rewrites titles and descriptions it thinks match the query poorly, and it does so often for descriptions, so a perfect snippet here is a strong suggestion, not a guarantee.
