How to choose rank tracking tools

A rank tracker checks where your pages sit in Google for a list of keywords and records it over time, by country, city and device. The plans look alike until you divide the price by what it buys. Our rank tracker pricing study put 33 trackers on one unit: the median entry plan costs $12 a month per 100 tracked keywords.

Count tracked keywords, not lookups

Suites list keyword research and rank tracking on the same pricing page, and the research figure is usually the larger one. Read the tracked-keyword line. Semrush's SEO plan and Advanced Web Ranking's Pro plan both cost $139 a month, but Semrush tracks 500 keywords and AWR 7,000, which is $27.80 against $1.99 per 100. RankWatch starts at $29 for 250 keywords a day.

Daily or weekly

A weekly tracker takes one reading where a daily one takes seven, so the cheapest price per keyword is often a weekly one. SpyFu's Basic plan follows 5,000 keywords weekly for $39, which our study worked out to $0.78 per 100. In the same study, 70 of 111 plans did not state how often they check at all. If the pricing page is silent, ask before you buy.

What else a tracker can follow

Local and map results. A business that ranks in the map pack needs grid tracking from many points around a location. That is a separate tool type, listed under local SEO tools.
SERP features. Featured snippets, People Also Ask, video and image packs change how many clicks a position earns.
AI answers. Many trackers now add prompts tracked in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews. SE Ranking's Core plan, priced in euros at €109 a month, includes 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts. Dedicated trackers for AI answers are in AI visibility tools.

How to choose

List the keywords you need to follow, multiplied by locations and devices. That number, not the plan name, decides the tier.
Decide whether you need daily data. For a stable site, weekly often is enough. For one in the middle of a migration or an algorithm update, it isn't.
Check how far back the history goes and whether you can export it.
If clients will see the data, check for white-label reports, which RankWatch adds on its $99 Large plan.
