PageSpeed Insights review: our take
PageSpeed Insights is the reference test for one page's speed, free and with no account needed. It reports two things at once: field data from the Chrome User Experience Report, meaning LCP, INP, CLS, FCP and TTFB measured on real visitors over the previous 28 days, and a Lighthouse lab run that scores Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO with a list of fixes. The API returns the same results and runs without a key, though a key is recommended for frequent automated queries.
It tests one URL at a time, and a low-traffic page gets no field data because CrUX has too few samples. For a whole site, the free version of Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs.
What PageSpeed Insights does
PageSpeed Insights reports how a page performs on mobile and desktop, combining real-user field data from the Chrome User Experience Report (LCP, INP, CLS, FCP, TTFB over the previous 28 days) with lab data from Lighthouse. The Lighthouse run scores Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO and lists audits with suggestions for improvement. The same results are available through the PageSpeed Insights API.
