Google's September 2026 spam update: the two-week rollout window closes this week

Google released the September 2026 spam update on September 24 at 09:15 Pacific time, according to its Search Status Dashboard. The entry says the update applies globally and to all languages, and that the rollout may take up to two weeks. That window runs out around October 8. As of October 6 the dashboard still lists the release and no completion note.
What a spam update changes
Google's automated spam detection runs all the time. A spam update is the name Google gives to a notable improvement to those systems, such as a new version of SpamBrain, its AI-based spam classifier. Google's page on detecting spam says the systems find 40 billion spammy pages a day and use machine learning and large language models to spot patterns across sites that look legitimate at first glance.
The dashboard entry does not say which kind of spam this update is aimed at. Google's spam policies are the list it measures against: scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse, expired domain abuse, cloaking, link schemes and the rest.
Recovery takes months, and links do not come back
Google's documentation on spam updates is specific about the aftermath. Sites that violate the policies may rank lower or drop out of results. Fixing the problem may help, but only once the automated systems learn "over a period of months" that the site complies. A link spam update is the exception: when Google discounts spammy links, whatever ranking benefit they gave is gone for good, and cleaning them up does not bring it back.
What to check now
Compare clicks and impressions in the Search Console performance report for the days before and after September 24, and split the comparison by page type rather than reading the site total. A drop concentrated in one template or one folder says far more than a sitewide line. Changes made in the middle of a rollout are hard to read afterwards, so wait for Google to mark the update complete before you rework a section. If traffic fell off a cliff on a single day, open the Manual actions report as well: a manual action is a separate penalty with its own reconsideration process.
