    Google Trends review: our take

Google Trends answers when and where a topic is searched, never how often. Interest comes from a sample of Google searches scaled from 0 to 100 for the chosen period and place, so terms can be compared against each other and by region, with related searches alongside and an export at the end. Trending now covers spikes from the past 24 hours. It is free.

What it cannot supply is a number to plan content against. Low-volume terms show as 0 and only popular terms appear, which rules it out for long-tail work. For monthly volumes, Keyword Tool starts at $88 with volume for 50,000 keywords a day, and Ubersuggest has a free plan for one website.

    What Google Trends does

Google Trends shows search interest from a sample of Google searches, normalised to a 0-100 scale for the chosen time range and location. The Explore page compares terms, breaks results down by region, lists related searches and lets you export or embed the data; Trending now shows searches spiking in the past 24 hours. It shows relative interest, not absolute search volume.
